FLOOR SCALES

FLOOR SCALES

When you need a lot of space to accurately measure large
objects, industrial floor scales are the perfect tool for the job.

Floor scales differ from their counterparts in the most obvious way - they are designed to be placed on the floor.  The most notable benefit of this is the ability to have larger, heavier scales that can perform every day through the toughest jobs.

With higher load capacities and more space in general, they can handle the biggest workloads with ease. Our commercial floor scales are highly durable and can withstand years of work without needing constant maintenance, making them a great option for highly active spaces that need to use scales every day.

You can find many options within our collection of industrial floor scales. At the most general, platform scales provide a simple, economical balance that can fit just about anywhere. With a minimalistic design, they are easy to install and intuitive to use, making them a great choice for quick, easy measuring. Additional mobility options are also available, from handlebars to wheels that will help you transport your balance around without hassle.

For a more intricate solution, cargo scales take some time to install and set up, but provide the highest level of work, allowing you to reliably measure the weight of everything from large shipments of cargo to entire vehicles.

Portability Solutions

WeighBuggy

Portable Hopper Scales

Perfect for fertilizer and grain applications that need portability.  Our Hopper Scale has a capacity of 1,000 lb. and comes with a weight indicator with a rechargeable battery, stainless steel housing, and LCD backlit display.

Weigh-a-Round

Portable Weigh-A-Round

General industrial portability is sometimes needed.  We offer portable solutions with inboard wheels for point-to-point straight-line mobility with optional rear mount swivel casters for increased maneuvering.  This scale can accommodate a weight indicator and a printer for a complete solution.

Weigh Bars

Portable Weigh Bars

Weigh bars are often found in farm and animal applications. However, they can also be adapted for industrial uses that are not practical for regular platform scales.

Floor scale calibration and service

Floor scales take the hardest daily use of any platform scale: forklift traffic, pallet drops, washdown and off-center loads. Those conditions move a scale out of tolerance long before it looks damaged. Instrument Calibration Solutions (ICS), a Brechbuhler Scales company, calibrates floor scales on site and issues digital certificates through ScaleSuite, available 24x7.

What we check on a floor scale

  • Corner (shift) test: the same test load placed on each corner and the center, to find a load cell that reads differently from the others
  • Increasing and decreasing load accuracy checks against certified test weights
  • Return-to-zero and repeatability
  • Load cell, junction box and cable condition, including moisture damage and forklift strike damage
  • Platform, feet, and mounting, so the deck is not binding or rocking
  • Indicator settings and display, including zero tracking and units

Different floor scale installations fail in different ways

A surface-mounted scale with a ramp can be knocked out of level by traffic. A pit-mounted or in-floor scale can collect water and debris under the deck. A portable hopper or platform scale moved between locations needs its level and feet checked each time it is set up. Tell us how yours is installed and used and we will plan the visit accordingly.

Legal-for-trade floor scales

If you buy or sell by weight or charge customers by the pound, your floor scale is typically covered by NIST Handbook 44 and your state weights and measures program, and the scale should carry an NTEP certificate of conformance. A calibration certificate from an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory documents how your scale performed. It does not replace a state inspection or registration where one is required.

Signs your floor scale needs attention

  • The same pallet weighs differently depending on where it sits on the deck
  • The display drifts or does not return to zero
  • Weights change after washdown or a wet season
  • The scale was hit by a forklift or a load cell or indicator was replaced
  • A customer disputes a weight or an auditor has asked for calibration records

Floor scale calibration FAQs

How often should a floor scale be calibrated?

At least once a year is common, and more often for scales in heavy use, in washdown areas, or where quality systems require it. A repair, a forklift strike or a disputed weight is a good reason to check sooner.

What is a corner or shift test?

The same test weight is placed on each corner and the center of the deck. A healthy scale reads the same in every position. A difference points to a failing load cell, a wiring problem or a mounting issue.

Can you calibrate a floor scale that is built into the floor?

Yes. In-floor and pit-mounted scales are checked in place. Contact us with your scale details and access conditions and we will plan the visit.

Is a calibration certificate the same as a state inspection?

No. A calibration certificate documents how your scale performs against traceable standards. A state weights and measures inspection or registration is a separate legal step for scales used in trade.

Where can I find my floor scale certificates?

Certificates are available online at any time through ScaleSuite.
