RFID AND BARCODE

RFID and Barcode solutions allow for quick tracking of assets, materials, and commodities

These technologies are used to provide a means of assigning unique identification and other information for a variety of different assets. Both technologies have great benefits and caveats based the particular application. Barcode technology (1D or 2D) is read-only and requires that one barcode be scanned at a time (line of sight). RFID is read/write and can potentially scan multiple tags simultaneously and from varying distances. (Up to 15 meters) Both technologies use scanners/readers that can be implemented as handheld, mobile, or fixed position devices and have a variety of connectivity options (Ethernet, Wi-Fi, RS232, USB, etc.)

RFID

Assets include:

  • Truck, Trailer, and Railcar Identification
  • Access Control
  • Asset Tracking
  • Inventory Management
  • Shipping/Receiving Verification
  • Palletized Package Verification
  • Telemetry and Timing
  • And more…

It has been our experience over the years that most clients in all industries experience some degree of problems (or pain) with some system or process within their facility. That pain can be:

  • Financial in that they are spending too much time and money on a legacy system that needs updated or replaced.

  • Productivity in that the system they are using may no longer be performing as efficiently as it once did due to changes or enhancements in operations.

  • Support-related in that they are not receiving cost-efficient, timely, or satisfactory support.

Why RFID and barcode integration with Brechbuhler

RFID and barcode identification are only as useful as the accuracy of the weight or process data they're tied to. Brechbuhler integrates identification technology directly into your weighing and material handling systems, so every scan is backed by trustworthy data rather than a disconnected lookup.

Choosing the right technology for the job

Barcode is a proven, low-cost, line-of-sight technology, while RFID offers read/write capability and can scan multiple tags at once from a distance of up to 15 meters. We help you weigh the tradeoffs for your specific application rather than defaulting to whichever technology is more familiar.

Fixed, mobile, and handheld reader options

Depending on your workflow, we design systems using fixed-position readers for automated tracking, mobile readers for staff moving through a facility, or handheld scanners for spot checks and manual verification.

Built for real-world connectivity

Our RFID and barcode systems support common connectivity options including Ethernet, Wi-Fi, RS232, and USB, so identification data integrates with the systems you already run rather than requiring a separate, isolated network.

Core RFID and barcode solutions

Truck, trailer, and railcar identification

We design RFID and barcode systems that automatically identify inbound and outbound vehicles, tying identification directly to scale weighments for accurate, hands-free record keeping.

Asset tracking and inventory management

From palletized packages to individual assets, we help you implement identification systems that keep inventory counts and asset locations accurate without manual data entry.

Shipping, receiving, and access control

RFID and barcode technology can also support shipping and receiving verification, access control, and telemetry and timing applications, often integrated with the same weighing infrastructure you already rely on.

RFID and barcode FAQs

Should I use RFID or barcode for my application?

It depends on your needs. Barcode is simpler and less expensive but requires line-of-sight scanning one tag at a time. RFID costs more but can scan multiple tags simultaneously from a distance and supports read/write data. We can help you evaluate which fits your process.

How far away can RFID tags be read?

Depending on the tag and reader type, RFID can typically be read from distances up to 15 meters, compared to barcode, which requires direct line-of-sight scanning at close range.

Can RFID or barcode systems integrate with our existing scales?

Yes, we regularly integrate RFID and barcode identification directly with scale systems, including truck, trailer, and railcar weighing, so identification and weight data are captured together.

What connectivity options are available for readers and scanners?

Our systems support a range of connectivity options including Ethernet, Wi-Fi, RS232, and USB, and can be implemented as fixed, mobile, or handheld devices depending on your workflow.

Can these systems support access control or asset tracking beyond weighing?

Yes, RFID and barcode technology can be applied to access control, asset tracking, inventory management, and shipping/receiving verification, often alongside your weighing systems.

Do you service RFID and barcode systems outside of Ohio?

Yes, our technicians travel to service RFID and barcode systems across a wide service area beyond Ohio. Contact us with your location and we'll let you know how we can help.
